Our most recent Cream of the Crop winner is Curtis Yankey, who, alongside his family, is making a positive impact through North Mountain Produce.
North Mountain Produce is a 10-acre farm that specializes in a variety of vegetables. What’s truly remarkable is that Curtis, his wife Judith, younger sister Emily, and their two children Taylor and Easton run this operation together. Their commitment to family farming is inspiring, and it’s a testament to the values of hard work and unity that many small family farms embody.
One key aspect that sets North Mountain Produce apart is their dedication to sustainable practices. Though not certified organic, Curtis and his family ensure that their produce is grown using practices that align with organic standards. This commitment to ethical and sustainable farming practices not only benefits the consumers who purchase their products but also has a positive impact on the environment.
Curtis and his family sell their produce at the Harrisonburg Farmers Market on Saturdays during the summer months. Their dedication to providing fresh, locally grown vegetables to the community is evident in the popularity of their best sellers – tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and onions. By prioritizing quality and taste, North Mountain Produce has become a beloved vendor at the farmers market, strengthening the connection between local farmers and consumers.
However, what truly sets Curtis and North Mountain Produce apart is their commitment to giving back to the community. Curtis proudly shares that they donate to three food banks, ensuring that their excess produce doesn’t go to waste and instead benefits those in need. With generosity at the core of their values, North Mountain Produce has found meaningful ways to support local initiatives and make a tangible difference in the lives of others.
